MATTHEW 14 - ''MOVED WITH COMPASSION''

Matthew 14:13–14
“Now when Jesus heard this, He withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by Himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed Him on foot from the towns. When He went ashore, He saw a great crowd, and He had compassion on them and healed their sick.”

The true meaning of compassion is not simply defined—it is demonstrated. Jesus showed compassion by healing, teaching, and feeding the multitude.

In Matthew 14:1–12, we read that John the Baptist was beheaded by King Herod. Jesus withdrew to a desolate place to mourn and to find peace—“His whole being was stirred to its deepest depths.” Instead, He encountered a vast crowd eagerly seeking what He could offer.

Jesus and His disciples could have made many excuses:
“This isn’t the right place.”
“This isn’t the right time.”
“The people can take care of themselves.”
Yet, Jesus still chose to have compassion on them.

Are you also wondering….

  • Why would people follow Jesus on foot to a desolate place? (Matthew 14:13)
  • Why would they stay with Him until evening? (Matthew 14:15)
  • Why would they go for days without food just to be with Him? (Matthew 15:32)
  • Why were they so desperate to see Jesus? (Matthew 14:13)

Jesus understood them-their needs, so He shifted His focus from Himself to the crowd. He knew that:

  • People are hungry
  • People are seeking truth
  • People need healing
  • People need direction

Seeing them travel long distances on foot, driven by desperation to see Him, moved His heart. This compassion led Him to heal, teach, and feed them. He did not send them away until they were nourished both physically and spiritually.

Jesus was moved with compassion for the crowd—and He is also moved with compassion for you. He knows your needs and your story. He knows your cries and desperation for help. He knows how you’ve come this far to obey, serve, and seek Him.

You are among that crowd—fully known and understood by Jesus. As you continue to seek after Him, God’s heart is moved.

Reflection:

  • How has Jesus shown compassion in your life?
  • Are we moved with compassion for others,
  • Or are we still focused on ourselves?

Compassion chain:
Because Jesus has shown compassion to me, I choose to show compassion to others.

  1. Amen! It reminded me that though I am among the crowds seeking for Him, He is there, He knows and understands. He will never let me continue to go without His nourishment. Truly, when we go to Him, we'll never be neglected. Thank you Lord!
