1 Corinthians 11 reminds us that TRUE WORSHIP MATTERS - it's not about us worshipping but how we worship - the proper manner of worshipping.
Paul wants us to understand that true worship must transform the believers and the church. He was not talking about the rituals or ceremonies but about the basic teaching and doctrine. He explains that God established principles of orders and authority and accountability.
1. HEADSHIP (v3) - CHRIST - MAN - WOMAN
Complementary role for harmony and witness - worship should reflect, humility, honor and respect of God's design.
Head covering in that culture (Jews and greeks) - is the external expression used to symbolize submission to God's order.
2. DIVISIVE MEAL - THE ABUSE OF LORD'S SUPPER (v17-22)
- the rich ate first and got drunk
- the poor humilated and got hungry
- unity was broken
***Communion is not a casual ritual - it is meant to express humility and love
3. TRUE LORD'S SUPPER - ORDAINED BY CHRIST (v 23-26)
- must proclaim Christ's death till He comes
- must be a remembrance of proclamation and hope-filled act
- when we partake we remember the gospel
***When worship becomes self-centered it dishonors Christ.
4. EXAMINE OURSELVES (v 27-34)
- not about perfection but reverence and repentance
- for restoration
- self examination, reconciliation and humility
***The table is Holy because Jesus is Holy
TRUE WORSHIP HONORS GOD'S ORDER, VALUES UNITY IN THE BODY AND APPROACHES CROSS WITH HOLY REVERENCE.
Let us reflect:
when we come to worship every Friday or Sunday service, do we come with the:
- right hearts?
- right relationship?
- right reverence?
When I come to worship is my life being transformed?
Let us pray:
Lord, teach us to worship with reverence and humility. Search our hearts Oh Lord and align our life with your truth. Help us honor You not only with our lips but with the right relationship and actions. May our worship reflect the love of Christ that transforms our life. Amen.
