Hebrews
2
Drifting or Anchored in Truth
Hebrews 2:1 (ESV) “Therefore
we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away
from it”.
The book of Hebrews was addressed to Christians of
Jewish descent, whom were accustomed to the teachings of keeping The Law as
given to Moses. This involved many rituals and commands (as written in
Leviticus and Deuteronomy) they had to obey. Because it was such a big part of
their culture and everyday life, it was very hard for them to accept that Jesus
was the Messiah and that atonement for their sins (salvation) is possible by
simply believing (having faith) that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the
Life and no one can come to the Father (God) except through me (Jesus) (John
14:6).
Many of us, before we accepted Jesus as our Lord
and Saviour, comes from a background where we had the belief that we must
perform and do good works to receive anything good, or “earn” our place in
heaven. Many people, from different backgrounds and religions, that we share
the Gospel with, have this wrongful belief too – even people that profess to be
Christian.
Here (v1-4) the petition to the Hebrews is to
hold on to the truth they heard about Jesus Christ as it is easy to drift
back into old religious and worldly beliefs if we are not anchored in the Truth
of the Word of God.
How do we hold on to the Truth of the Gospel?
·
We pray and ask that our minds be
renewed by the Word of God (Rom 12:2)).
·
We fellowship with members of the
church (Acts2:42).
·
We test preaching and teaching we
see on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc. against the Word of God.
·
We take captive every thought
under the obedience of Christ (2 Cor 10:5, Phil 4:8)
·
We spend time with the Lord in
prayer and reading the Bible.
·
We pray about everything (Phil
4:6, Rom 12:12 and Col 4:2); it has to become a way of life for us.
Reflection
Are you anchored in the Truth or are you drifting? Ask the Lord to show you – renounce wrongful
beliefs and turn back to Jesus, to the Truth.
Prayer
Lord, we thank you for your Word, the Bible that
guides us in all wisdom and truth. Help us Holy Spirit to be steadfast in
prayer, in our faith in Jesus Christ and our trust in the Lord who saves us. To
God be all the Glory for His Son Jesus Christ our Messiah. Amen
